THE TENSION BETWEEN THE PROPHECIES OF THE LORD JESUS AS KING AND AS SERVANT

1. The prophecies of the Lord Jesus as the Messianic King

a. The government would be on His shoulders   (Isaiah 9:6-7)
i. The Lord God would give His Son
ii. His kingdom will have no end
iii. He will establish the throne of David
b. The Spirit of the Lord would rest on Him   (Isaiah 11:1-5)
i. He will be a Rod from the stem of Jesse
ii. He will have the seven-fold Spirit
iii. He will rule with righteousness and equity

2. The prophecies of the Lord Jesus as a servant   (Isaiah 42:1)

a. He will be the Lord’s servant
b. He will be the elect servant of the Lord
c. He will bring about justice to the world

3. There is a tension between these two sets of prophecies

MAINTAINING THE TENSION BETWEEN BEING KING AND SERVANT

1. The Lord Jesus’ part – Being a servant

“Behold! My servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights.”   Isaiah 42:1
a. The Lord Jesus chose to be a servant
b. He did not come to be served but to serve.   (Matthew 20:28)
c. He sought to serve God faithfully

2. God’s part – The giving of His Spirit

“I have put My Spirit upon Him…”   Isaiah 42:1
a. Anointing of the Spirit of God   (Luke 3:22)
b. Filling of the Spirit of God   (Luke 4:1)
i. Being led by the Spirit of God   (Luke 4:1)
ii. Empowered by the Spirit of God   (Luke 4:14)
iii. He was obedient to the Spirit’s leading

3. Having godly character

“He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.”   Isaiah 42:2
a. He did not raise His voice unnecessarily
b. There was graciousness and gentleness
c. There was fullness of self-control

FULFILMENT OF THE PROPHECY IN BEING THE MESSIANIC SERVANT

1. Having the mindset of a servant   (Philippians 2:5-8)

a. He emptied himself of all his rights and privileges
b. He took on the form of a bondservant
c. He humbled Himself
d. He became obedient to the point of death

2. Fulfilling the will of God   (Hebrews 10:5-10)

a. A body prepared for the Lord
b. The Lord Jesus presented Himself and His body to God
c. Conscious of all that God had written of Him in His word
d. He was obedient to doing His will

CHALLENGES

1. Following the example of the Lord Jesus as servant

2. Seeking the filling of the Spirit of God

3. Learning to develop good character

4. Being obedient as His servants
