Introduction

1. Many wonderful aspects of Christ that we have learned.

a) The captain of our salvation
b) The Apostle …One who was sent
c) The High Priest, according to the order of Melchizedek

2. Challenged and encouraged to apply our faith

a) Let us be diligent
b) Let us come to the throne of grace
The problem of the disobedience of the “sons of man”

1. Understanding disobedience

“For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,”   Hebrews 2:2

a) Disobedience happens

i) When we do not hear the Word of God properly
ii) When we transgress…cross the line

b) No regard for the Word of God

c) Serious consequences

i) Just reward
ii) No blessing
“And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?”   Hebrews 3:18

2. A perennial problem

a) A past problem of Israel
b) A problem that persisted in the New Testament
“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.”   Hebrews 4:11
c) A present problem that continues today
Obedience… A hallmark feature of the Son of Man

1. Learned obedience as the Son of Man

a) Obedience to God
i) Involves hearing the Word of God
ii) Submission of the will
iii) Fulfilling the word of God
b) The Son of Man learned obedience as Man
i) In the flesh   (Hebrews 5:7, John 1:14)
ii) As a child   (Luke 2:52)
iii) As an adult   (Matthew 4, Luke 4)

2. Learned obedience in His role and ministry as the Great High Priest

a) Obedience at His ordination to be High Priest
“So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You.”   Hebrews 5:5
b) In fulfilling His role as High Priest
“As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek; who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,”   Hebrews 5:6, 7

3. Learned obedience in suffering as the Son of Man

“Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.”   Hebrews 5:8
a) As Son
i) As the Son of Man (Human)   (Hebrews 2)
ii) As the Messianic Son of Man (Great High Priest)
b) As Son, He sought to learn obedience to God in suffering
i) Poor and humble
ii) Hard and strenuous
iii) Carrying the cross and crucified

4. Learned obedience through the growth of the Lord Jesus

a) Perfected   (Hebrews 5:9)
b) Became the Author of eternal salvation   (Hebrews 5:9)

The challenge to learn obedience

1. True salvation   (Hebrews 5:9)

a) To all who obey Him
b) Obedience should characterise all of us as true believers

2. Follow the example of the Lord Jesus

a) His submission
b) His humility
c) His godly fear

3. God working in us   (Philippians 2:13)

a) To will
b) To do

4. Spiritual maturity   (Hebrews 5:12-14)

a) When still babes in Christ, a tendency to be disobedient
b) When more mature, become more obedient
