AN ANALYSIS OF DANIEL’S PRAYER II

O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day-
To the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.

O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. Daniel 9:7-8

1. With reference to the Lord

a) Righteousness belongs to Him

b) He was righteous even if He did send Judah into a 70 captivity period

2. With reference to the Captives

a) Shame of face

b) Who should have shame of face?

i) The men of Judah

ii) The inhabitants of Jerusalem

iii) All Israel

iv) Those who are near by

v) Those who are far off in other regions (countries)

vi) Kings

vii) Princes

viii) Fathers

3. Reason why God had driven them out of their homeland

a) Because of their unfaithfulness

b) Because of sinning grievously against God

c) This apostasy was uncalled for!

i) God had blessed wonderfully

ii) God had instructed

iii) God had sent many prophets to lead them back

iv) God’s prophets had been shamefully ill-treated

v) They had rejected God!

4. Significance of this Confession

a) No one on record had made this attempt to make such a confession

b) This Confession was more national than personal

c) This Confession is best understood in the light of Daniel as an Intercessor

d) Many examples of prophets who were significant intercessors

i) Moses as an example of an intercessor

ii) Jeremiah as an intercessor

iii) Hosea as an intercessor

iv) Amos as an intercessor
