THE BATTLE AGAINST SIN

1. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? (Roman 6:1)

2. The response of the Apostle Paul

a) Certainly not! (Romans 6:2a)
b) How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (Romans 6:2b)

3. “Dead to sin” explained

Baptised into Christ Jesus (Romans 6:3a)

a) Baptised into His death (Romans 6:3b)
b) Buried with Him through baptism into death (Romans 6:4)

4. The symbol of Baptism

a) Much more than mode of baptism
b) Great significance in full identification with Christ Jesus
c) Baptism is a symbol of full union with Christ the Lord

5. The Death and burial of Christ Jesus the Lord

a) Its significance must be carefully understood
b) The death of Christ has deep theological significance
i) He was judged for our sins
ii) He bore the penalty of our sins on Himself
iii) He died that we may be saved from the wrath of God
iv) He died to destroy the power of sin over us
v) He defeated the power of Satan and his power over us
vi) He died that we may have a new life
c) The death of Christ should have great personal significance
i) There must be deep personal appreciation
ii) There must be a deep personal conviction to resist the power of sin
iii) There must be deep commitment to die to sin
iv) There must be deep desire to live as much of a sin-free life as possible
v) There must be a deep motivation to develop this new life we have been given
