INTRODUCTION

1. The Passover Feast

a) This was instituted by God
b) Israel was to keep this as a commemorative feast

2. The Lord’s Supper

a) A new commandment
b) The Lord’s Supper is to commemorate the Saviour as the Paschal Lamb

THE CELEBRATION OF THE PASSOVER

14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him.

15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves;

18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

Luke 22:14-18

1. The Lord celebrated the Passover with His Apostles

2. This was His last Meal with them

a) He approached it with holy desire
b) This was to be His last Meal before His suffering

THE LORD’S SUPPER

19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

21 But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.

22 And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

Luke 22:19-23

1. Institution of the Lord’s Supper

a) The Bread that represents His body
b) The Cup that represents His blood
c) The New Covenant is sealed by His blood

2. A solemn statement

a) That the Lord would be betrayed
b) That one among them would betray Him
c) Woe was pronounced upon the betrayer

3. The Disciples

a) They were not prepared for this statement
b) They could not believe that any among them could betray Him

A SECOND SOLEMN STATEMENT

31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.

32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Luke 22:31-34

1. A personal word to Peter

a) “Satan has asked for you”
b) “That he may sift you as wheat”
c) Peter would be sorely tested

2. A precious word of comfort

a) “But I have prayed for you”
b) “That your faith should not fail”

3. A precarious position

a) What was the faith of Peter like?
b) He was rebuked for having little faith
c) This was a rebuke that was given to all the disciples
d) He would deny the Lord Jesus three times

4. The proposition given

a) Of returning to the Lord
b) Of strengthening the brethren

OUR MAUNDY THURSDAY CHALLENGE

1. To be aware that our faith may be severely tested

2. To understand that Satan may be behind the testing of our faith

3. To cultivate a humble spirit:

a) That we would return quickly to the Lord should we falter and fail
b) That we would strengthen others from the lessons of life
c) That we should give greater attention to the cultivation of our faith
