Title: A Major Misstep

INTRODUCTION

1. Review I: The Doctrine of Prophecy

a) “Doctrine” simply means “teaching”
b) “Prophecy” has a number of elements:
i) God is the Source
ii) Foretelling of the future
iii) Revelation
iv) It has to be confirmed and proven accurate

2. Review II: The Prophecy concerning Israel Genesis 15:13-16

a) This was given to Abram as a Promise
b) This Promise is repeated a number of times
c) This Prophecy was revealed in a special dream

3. Review III: The Promise of many descendants

a) As many as the stars in the sky Genesis 15:5
b) Descendants Genesis 15:13

THE PROBLEM OF BEING BARREN

1. Sarai could not bear children Genesis 16:2

2. Abram and Sarai had dwelt in Canaan for 10 years Genesis 16:3

A HUMAN SOLUTION OFFERED

1. Sarai offered Hagar as a second wife Genesis 16:2-3

2. Perhaps Hagar could bear children for her (Sarai) Genesis 16:2a

3. Abram heeded the advice of Sarai Genesis 16:2b

THINGS GO BADLY WRONG

1. Hagar became pregnant Genesis 16:4a

2. She despised Sarai Genesis 16:4b

THE BLAME GAME

1. Sarai blames Abram Genesis 16:5a

2. She complains that Hagar despised her Genesis 16:5b

THINGS GOT WORSE

1. Abram speaks of Sarai as a maid Genesis 16:6a

2. Sarai can do what she pleased with her Genesis 16:6b

3. Sarai treated Hagar very badly Genesis 16:6c

4. Hagar fled from her presence Genesis 16:6d

A SPECIAL DIVINE VISIT

1. Hagar had a special visit from the Lord

2. This Person was called “The Angel of the LORD” Genesis 16:7

3. He spoke kindly and gently to her Genesis 16:8a

4. Hagar poured out her woes Genesis 16:8b

5. Divine advice given

a) Return to Sarai as her mistress Genesis 16:9a
b) Submit to her Genesis 16:9b
c) Blessings from God will be given Genesis 16:10

d) Her son Ishmael Genesis 16:11-12

i) God has heard her prayers
ii) He will be strong and wild
iii) He will face many conflicts

APPROPRIATE RESPONSE OF HAGAR

1. She knew who the Angel of the LORD was

2. She knew that He was the LORD

3. She called Him, “You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees” Genesis 16:13a

4. She marveled that she has “seen Him who sees me” Genesis 16:13b

5. She bore Abram a son who was called Ishmael Genesis 16:15

CONCLUSION

1. Missteps occur in life

a) Problems arise
b) Bad consequences

2. Seeing God’s solution

a) God’s Presence
b) His promise
c) Obedience to His word given
