Text: Exodus 19:1-6
Title: A special treasure to Me

INTRODUCTION

1. The children of Israel had departed from Egypt

2. They were known as slaves of Egypt (Exodus 1:13-14)

a) The Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigour
b) The Egyptians made their lives bitter with hard bondage

3. But what were they actually meant to be?

THE JOURNEY TAKEN

1 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before the mountain.

Exodus 19:1-2

1. The children of Israel camped there before the mountain

a) God had given Moses a sign (cf. Exodus 3:12)
b) Having brought the people out of Egypt, Moses would serve God on this mountain
c) Reaching Sinai was an important marker

2. The journey that had lasted three months reviewed

a) The land of Egypt (cf. Exodus 12)
b) Rephidim (cf. Exodus 17)
c) The Wilderness of Sinai

 

THE PEOPLE TO WHOM GOD WAS GOING TO GIVE A WORD

And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

Exodus 19:3

1. Moses went up the mountain to God

2. Moses was going to receive a word from God for the people

3. The names God used to identify the people

a) The house of Jacob
i. Jacob was a reference to his sinful past
ii. The people were to be reminded of their sinful ways
b) The children of Israel
i. God had given Jacob a new name
ii. This was to symbolize a fresh start and a new beginning
iii. This new name represented potential, promise, and hope

A REMINDER

You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.

Exodus 19:4

1. God wanted the children of Israel to remember His deeds

2. Some of the works of God which the children of Israel had experienced

a) What God did to the Egyptians
b) How God bore them on eagles’ wings and brought them to Himself

THE CHALLENGE TO RESPOND WELL

5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.

Exodus 19:5-6

 

1. Now therefore

a) God had done His part
b) God had just reminded the people of this
c) He now called the people to respond appropriately and do their part

2. The responses God asked for

a) Obedience
b) Keeping His covenant
i. Abraham was given a covenant
ii. Soon, the children of Israel would receive a covenant of their own

3. The encouraging results which shall follow

a) These results were contingent on the people doing their part first
b) Then they shall be
i. A special treasure to God above all people
ii. A kingdom of priests and a holy nation to God

OUR ENCOURAGEMENT

1. Let us be reminded

a) Of all that God has done to save us
b) That we are called to lead a new life and to live by faith

2. Let us demonstrate hallmarks of this new life

a) Obedience and faithful keeping of God’s Word
b) A special relationship with God
c) Serving God
