THE PENULTIMATE PLAGUE

21 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.”
22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days.
23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

Exodus 10:21-23

1. Thick Darkness

a) This may not seem very significant
b) But pitch darkness can have devastating effects

2. Three days of “thick darkness”

a) The Pharaoh did not know how long the darkness would last
b) All normal life would come to a standstill in total darkness
i) No one could see another person
ii) Nobody dared to move around for fear of hurting oneself

3. The Obvious Difference

a) There was light in the land of Goshen
b) Life was Normal there among the children of Israel

THE CALL OF MOSES TO APPEAR BEFORE THE PHARAOH

Then Pharaoh called to Moses and said, “Go, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your little ones also go with you.”

Exodus 10:24

1. Pharaoh gave permission for the children of Israel to depart

a) The parents
b) The children
c) All of the children of Israel may depart

2. But he had restrictions:

a) The flocks
b) The herds
c) They must remain behind

3. His devious mind

a) He knew the human heart well
b) Flocks and herds were the “wealth” of the people
c) The children of Israel would return to their flocks and herds!

THE RESPONSE OF MOSES

25 But Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may
sacrifice to the LORD our God.
26 Our livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the LORD our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the LORD until we arrive there.”

Exodus 10:25-26

1. He rejected this Restriction

a) The herds and flocks must go with them
b) They would be offered as sacrifices to God

2. Moses had not budged one bit

a) All the children of Israel must leave together
i) The old
ii) The young
b) All their belongings must go with them
i) Herds
ii) Flocks
iii) All that belonged to them

3. The Unknown

a) They did not know what the Future would be like
b) They need all their resources

THE ANGER OF THE PHARAOH

27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go.
28 Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”

Exodus 10:27-28

1. Pharaoh continued to be arrogant

2. He had seemingly made some concessions

3. However, every suggestion had been rejected

4. This was a humbling thing to accept

5. In anger, he threatened

a) “Get away from me!”
b) “Take heed to yourself and see my face no more!”
c) “For in the day you see my face you shall die!”

6. Pharaoh’s heart

a) It had hardened
b) God had allowed it to harden

THE RESPONSE OF MOSES

So Moses said, “You have spoken well. I will never see your face again.”

Exodus 10:29

1. Moses was unfazed

2. He would not need to see Pharaoh any further

3. He knew the plagues were coming to an end soon!

4. Moses had learned much along the way:

a) To trust God deeply
b) To be faithful
c) To have courage

OUR CHALLENGE

1. What have we learned about God?

2. What is the state of our Faith in the Lord?
